2025 Spotlight Reading Series

This year’s Spotlight Reading Series will feature works of Theodore Ward (1902-1983), often referred to as the “dean of Black dramatists,” whose works explored the complexities of Black life in America, particularly during the Great Depression.

A prominent figure in the Black Chicago Renaissance Ward’s plays were known for their naturalistic and nuanced portrayal of the Black experience, moving away from the stereotypical “Negro theatricals” prevalent at the time. He tackled controversial themes such as racial discrimination, economic hardship, the appeal of Communism, and internal struggles within the Black community. Despite his talent and critical recognition (including a Guggenheim Fellowship), Ward’s career was often hindered by the overall lack of support for Black theater, leading many of his plays to be overlooked. However, his influence on later generations of Black playwrights and his dedication to complex storytelling remain significant. He was posthumously inducted into the Chicago Literary Hall of Fame.

The Spotlight Reading Series will run from August 13–15 at the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts (915 E 60th Street). All events are free and open to the public and reservations are required.
