Court Theatre Goes from the Midway to Broadway
On Wednesday, September 17, friends, alumni, and supporters of the University of Chicago gathered at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City to celebrate UChicago alumni making significant artistic contributions to theatre. Featured artists included Pulitzer Prize winners (and UChicago alumni!) Martyna Majok (Cost of Living) and David Auburn (Proof), Tony Award winners Mark Hollmann and Greg Kotis (Urinetown), and social media phenom Jake Schroeder.
After a brief reception, the evening kicked off with Jake Schroeder’s hilarious performance of a new song he created to honor UChicago’s theatre alumni and unofficial motto, “Where fun goes to die.” A panel moderated by Marilyn F. Vitale Artistic Director Avery Willis Hoffman followed, where playwrights Martyna Majok and David Auburn spoke fondly about their time as students at the University and how their time on campus influenced their careers. The audience also enjoyed a performance from Greg Kotis and Mark Hollmann’s new musical, Zombie Musical, performed by Katlyn Carlson (Be More Chill) and London Mahaley (UChicago AB 2025). The program ended with a Q&A will all the artistic participants, in which they answered questions about how to succeed in the industry and the importance of their education.
