Community Reads Book Club
Wednesday, April 29, 2026 I 5:30pm I Blackstone Branch Library (4904 S. Lake Park Avenue)
The vast spectrum of LGBTQ+ life in Chicago is too vibrant to be held in a single space. Yet, since 1981, the Gerber/Hart Library and Archives has dedicated itself to preserving the records, stories, and struggles of the city’s queer communities.
In Queer Legacies: Stories from Chicago’s LGBTQ Archives, pioneering scholar John D’Emilio digs into this treasure trove to unearth a kaleidoscopic view of the worlds built by previous generations. His essays range from the political to the deeply personal, offering an inclusive look at a fifty-year fight for visibility and equality led by Chicagoans who made history.
Space is limited and reservations are strongly encouraged. Copies of Queer Legacies can be checked out through the Chicago Public Library, and we encourage you to reserve your copy directly from the Blackstone Branch.
Community Reads Conversation
Saturday, May 2, 2026 I 4:30pm I Court Theatre (5535 S. Ellis Avenue)
The Community Reads Series will culminate in a post-show conversation exploring the creative journey of Out Here. Leader Facilitator Adia Sykes will be joined by the show’s bookwriter and co-lyricist, Leslie Buxbaum, a director and writer known for her expertise in ensemble-driven and physical theatre. Together, they will discuss the process of adapting a real-life coming-out story into a new musical for the stage.
Reservations for the post-show conversation are not required. Attendance at Out Here is encouraged, but not required.
