a comedy of bad manners by Richard Huggett
by Richard Huggett
directed by Nicholas Rudall
Richard Huggett's comedy traces the history of Bernard Shaw's first popular play Pygmalion, from its original inspiration through rehearsals and finally to its successful production at His Majesty's Theatre in 1914. As told by Mrs. Patrick Campbell, the darling of the Edwardian stage who created the first Eliza; Sir Herbert Beebohm Tree, the last of England's great actor-managers; Shaw himself; and numberous other characters--all of whom are portrayed by two performers--The First Night of Pygmalion captures the sparkling wit and clash of egos for which Shaw and his circle are renowned.
