American premiere
an original play by Trevor Griffiths
based on the film Unfinished Piece for Mechanical Piano by A. Adabashyan and N. Mikhalkov
directed by Charles Newell
The American premiere of Trevor Griffiths' tribute to Anton Chekhov's style of comic tragedy. Using themes and characters from Chekhov's works, Piano is a poignant look at the painful recognition of one's own mediocrity. A series of alternately amusing and heartbreaking love triangles are at the center of this piece, questioning the boundaries of both fidelity and social class. While a middle-class protagonist is in the throes of mid-life crisis and despair, it is the servants and peasants who ultimately remind us that "Everything's possible."
