CHARLES
NEWELL
(Director/Artistic Director) most recently directed Court
Theatre's critically acclaimed production of Hamlet. Other
Court directorial credits include Piano, The Invention of Love,
The Learned Ladies, Fair Ladies at a Game of Poem Cards, The Little
Foxes, La Bête, The Cherry Orchard, Nora, and An Ideal
Husband. Mr. Newell made his Chicago directorial debut in 1993
with Court's production of The Triumph of Love, which won
the Joseph Jefferson Award for Best Production. He also directed
Court's acclaimed pairing of The Misanthrope and Travesties,
as well as Celimene and the Cardinal (Jeff Award, Best Director),
Travels with My Aunt, The Philadelphia Story, Henry IV: The Shadow
of Succession, Barber of Seville, and Once in a Lifetime.
Other directing credits include Two Gentlemen of Verona (Arena
Stage, John Houseman's The Acting Company), The History Plays,
Cymbeline (Guthrie Theatre), Macbeth (California Shakespeare),
Blithe Spirit (Alabama Shakespeare), Love's Labour's Lost
(PlayMakers Rep), Journey of the Fifth Horse (Juilliard),
Pericles (Tisch School, NYU), and The Jewel Box and
Don Giovanni (Chicago Opera Theater). Before coming to Court,
Mr. Newell served as the Resident Director of the Guthrie Theatre,
Staff Repertory Director for John Houseman's The Acting Company,
and won the 1992 TCG Alan Schneider Director Award. He has been
a strong advocate for the arts by serving as a panelist on the NEA
Theatre Program, the NEA/TCG Career Development for Directors, and
the New York State Council for the Arts. Last year, Mr. Newell was
appointed to the Board of Directors of Theatre Communications Group
(TCG), the national service organization that promotes American
not-for-profit theaters. He will direct Court's upcoming production
of The Romance Cycle.
