One of Shakespeare's most popular comedies is full of one of his most popular themes: mistaken identity. Duke Orsino is in love with Olivia, and sends his messenger Cesario to tell her of his affections. Cesario performs his task too well, and soon Olivia has fallen for Cesario instead. But Cesario is actually Viola, a young woman madly in love with Orsino. "Why, this is very midsummer madness"! To add to Olivia's troubles, her maid and uncle conspire to convince her servant Malvolio that he is the actual object of her desires, gulling him into a hilarious and disastrous public exhibition. "If this were played upon a stage now, I could condemn it as improbable fiction." |
