Piano
an original play by Trevor Griffiths
based on the film Unfinished Piece for Mechanical Piano
by A. Adabashyan and N. Mikhalkov
directed by Charles Newell
March 30 - June 17, 2001
"...a harrowing comedy...captures that eerie, humid moment which precedes the storm..."
-- The Sunday Times (London)
The American premiere of Trevor Griffiths' tribute to Anton Chekhov's style of comic tragedy. Using themes and characters from Chekhov's works, Piano is a poignant look at the painful recognition of one's own mediocrity. A series of alternately amusing and heartbreaking love triangles are at the center of this piece, questioning the boundaries of both fidelity and social class. While a middle-class protagonist is in the throes of mid-life crisis and despair, it is the servants and peasants who ultimately remind us that "Everything's possible." |
