On March 30, Artistic Director Charles Newell proudly accepted the Actor’s Equity Association’s (AEA) Spirit Recognition Award. The Spirit Award is given to institutions that “have made non-traditional casting a way of life.”
Court’s commitment to diversity is reflected not only in its casting choices but also by presenting numerous works from the African-American canon of classic theatre. These works range from Fences to Flyin’ West to the upcoming productions of The Piano Lesson and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
Under the leadership of Charles Newell and Resident Artist Ron OJ Parson, Court Theatre has shown that when theatre companies reflect the diverse communities they serve everyone benefits.
Court is also honored to be in the company of the other 2009 Spirit Award Winners, The Goodman Theatre, Victory Gardens and Mixed Blood Theatre.
